  • AP Exams

Falmouth Academy’s integrated college preparatory curriculum emphasizes problem-based learning and writing across the curriculum. This sequential course of studies establishes the academic foundation while reinforcing the value of membership in a shared intellectual community. All students take the same highly challenging heterogeneous courses in English and history in grades 9-12 and science in grades 9-10. Modern language, mathematics, and upper-level science are tracked courses, and students are placed in these courses based on prior coursework and teacher recommendations.

Falmouth Academy does not offer AP courses because we are philosophically committed to work emphasizing depth of knowledge, group discussion, extensive writing, and interdisciplinary, project-based research. Students may sit for AP exams in several subjects including Calculus, English Literature and Composition, French Language and Culture, and German Language and Culture.

In the past five years, Falmouth Academy students have taken 124 AP exams and have earned a score of 3 or above on 73% of these tests

All Falmouth Academy courses are equivalent to Honors level or above and advanced courses are similar to AP courses in workload and academic challenge.

  • Performing and Visual Arts

Students in all grades participate in FA's signature program, Arts Across the Curriculum. Instead of having students study art in academic classes, we invite students to actually create the art. The Arts Across the Curriculum program engages multiple intelligences through the arts and exposes all students to the traditional subject matter in a tactile, sensory, and expressive way. By doing so, learning is deeply embedded—and often inspired.

FA's drama department produce and perform three plays a year, two open to the whole school and one for middle-school students only.

In 2017, FA completed a performing arts center, which includes a music room, black-box theater, design shop, gallery space, and a state-of-the-art control room for lighting and sound.

In 2021-22, 5 students were named to Senior and Junior District Music Festivals and 1 was named to All-Cape Music Festivals.

6 students won 8 awards in the 2021 Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Competition, including 2 gold, 3 silver, and 3 honorable mentions.

6 students won 9 awards at the 2022 SISAL (small independent schools art league) Art Competition, including best in show, first place for drawing, second place for printmaking, third place for photography, and six honorable mentions.
