Giving Q&A

Why does Falmouth Academy charge tuition and then ask for more money?

Falmouth Academy is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. Unlike public schools, it receives no government funding. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of an FA education, nor does it allow for the continued growth of the school, such as additional facilities and programs. The Annual Fund and capital campaigns cover those costs.

How much should I give to the Annual Fund?

Our goal is to have everyone affiliated with the school contribute annually to the Annual Fund at a level that is comfortable for your family. Presently, 100 percent of faculty, staff and trustees give annually.

How can I give?

Where should I direct my gift? What are Falmouth Academy’s current priorities?

Most alumni, families and friends give unrestricted gifts to the Falmouth Academy Annual Fund so that the gifts can be applied to the school’s most pressing needs. Others give to specific known needs, such as financial aid, faculty development and endowment. In August 2007, the Falmouth Academy Board of Trustees approved the school’s Strategic Plan.

What is the difference between an endowment gift and an annual gift? How does FA’s endowment work?

Annual gifts are to be spent in their entirety during a specific period of time. Gifts that create endowment funds are meant to exist in perpetuity, and they are invested for long-term growth. In most years, Falmouth Academy re-invests endowment interest earnings to grow the endowment. In other years, endowment earnings are used to support regular or special programs, as approved by the Board of Trustees.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Yes. All gifts to Falmouth Academy are tax-deductible subject to the limits allowed by the Internal Revenue Service.

How can I find out if my company will match my gift to Falmouth Academy?

Many companies match employee gifts up to a certain limit per year. To find out if your company is among those participating in a gift-matching program, ask your human resources department for information about your company’s gift-matching policy.

What other giving options are available?

Gifts can be made in a variety of ways. We accept single gifts of cash, check or credit-card by mail, phone, online or in person. You may also make a pledge to be paid over several years. We are also equipped to receive gifts of stock, bequest gifts, as well as some in-kind gifts.

How can I get more information about making a gift?
