Falmouth Academy Inducts 38 Students in to National Honor Society

In a family ceremony at Falmouth Academy Sunday afternoon, 38 students were inducted into the Falmouth Academy chapter of the National Honor Society.

Introduced by faculty advisor Julie Swanbeck and student NHS president Ryan Ackell, four current members of the NHS spoke briefly about the values of the society: senior Christina Nunley about character; junior Carlo Bocconcelli, scholarship; senior Chloe Brake, service and citizenship; and sophomore Victoria Avis, leadership.

Monica Hough, who teaches English to seventh and ninth graders and coordinates Falmouth Academy’s middle school, spoke to the students about “The Importance of Being Earnest.” She encouraged them to state what they believe simply, honestly, and passionately. “Do not cover the strength of your convictions with a shield of sarcasm or self-consciousness. Nothing will make you more vulnerable. Nothing will make you more courageous,” she said. “When we use humor to mask our real feelings rather than to reveal them, we lose some of the power and passion of our ideas.”

Inducted into the junior honor society for grades 7 and 8 were eighth graders Mary Kate Jones and Oliver Russell. And seventh graders Gwen Borning, Samuel Bresnick, Martha Clark, Helena Connell, Rebecca Cox, Matthew Donahue, Randall Driscoll, Jane Earley, Allison Eldredge, Kiric Hallahan, Megan Iverson, Nicholas Kania, Coralee LaRue, Sarah Lott, Cecelia Mastroianni, James Melvin, Lily Turner, Samira Wolf.

New members of the school’s senior National Honor Society (grades 9 – 12) are:
senior Jaroslav Hofierka; juniors Henry Jones, William Mendelsohn, and Mary Rosbach; sophomores Hope Allison, Mimi Feldmann-DeMello, and Owen Sullivan;
freshmen Charles Colt-Simonds, Samuel Cox, Grant Doney, Natasha Garland, Wanting Huang, Gregory Pickart, Nicolas Pingal, Madelena Primini, Sintra Reves-Sohn, Anxin Shen, and Charlotte Van Voorhis.

On Earth Day, Monday, April 22, the Boston Red Sox held their first-ever carbon-neutral game, and they did it with the help of Falmouth Academy. In order to achieve a zero-carbon footprint, the team purchased renewable energy credits to offset the emissions generated by the game.
