Susan G. Morse, chair of the FA Board of Trustees, announced that Dr. Victor M. Aviles of East Sandwich has been elected to our 16-member board. He is the founder of Hematology Oncology Specialists of Cape Cod, P.C. in North Falmouth, and father of two FA students.
Dr. Aviles received his B.A. from Brown University in 1987, and his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1991. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Aviles served his internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He continued at Penn as a Fellow in Hematology-Oncology, and was appointed to the Penn faculty as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1997. He coauthored several articles with his colleagues in the division of head and neck oncology, and enjoyed teaching medical students, residents and fellows. He now serves as Chief of Hematology-Oncology at Falmouth Hospital, and as Consultant in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Aviles has organized four educational symposia for patients on the Upper Cape. He also moderates the local hospital tumor conference and chairs its cancer committee.
Dr. Aviles and his wife, Dr. Ann De Weer Aviles, a pediatrician (also Brown University class of 1987 and Washington University School of Medicine class of 1991) were married in Woods Hole in 1989. They have three children, two at FA. Thomas is a sophomore and Catherine is an eighth grader. Their sister Stephanie is in the fifth grade at Bridgeview Montessori School, where Dr. De Weer Aviles serves on the board.
In 2001 the Aviles family moved to Cape Cod to be closer to her sister’s family in Norwell and her parents, Paul and Mia De Weer, who live part-time in Woods Hole. For more than 40 years, Paul De Weer has been a research scientist (squid axons) at the Marine Biological Laboratory.
Dr. Aviles is an avid sports enthusiast who tries to attend as many FA athletic contests as possible. He also enjoys music, reading and spending time with his family.
“FA’s board, like its faculty and staff, is a talented, hard-working group of community members who value the rigorous and collegial community of learning that is Falmouth Academy,” said Ms. Morse. “Vic is a perfect fit and I am delighted to welcome him to the board.”
“The opportunity to serve as a Falmouth Academy trustee is a special privilege,” he said.
