7th and 8th Graders Vote for Their Favorite Books
The 7th and 8th graders submitted their ballots, and we tallied the votes. This year’s winner is Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. These five acclaimed and best-selling fantasy-adventure books follow Percy, a son of Poseiden, and his demigod friends as they battle mythological monsters and maneuver a modern world where the Greek gods are still alive. J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series round out the top three in our voting. Other popular titles include: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown; Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell; and, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Piccoult.

Library Receives Grant to Purchase New Science Materials for Grades 7 and 8
In December 2008, the library received a grant of $1,250 from The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation, based in Getzville, New York. This school-based library mini-grant provides funds to school libraries to purchase books for use by students ages 5-13. In order to support the science curriculum and our students’ science fair research, the library will use the grant money to purchase two science-related encyclopedia sets published by U-X-L and 17 volumes of the Exploring Science series published by Compass Point Books. With the purchase of these resources, which are written at the reading level of an average seventh grader, we hope to address the need for comprehensive and accurate science information for our students in grades 7and 8.
