The Falmouth Academy Players will perform Thornton Wilder’s Our Town on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May12, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Simon Center for the Arts at Falmouth Academy, 7 Highfield Drive, Falmouth, MA. Admission is free, but donations of non-perishable food items for the Falmouth Service Center are gratefully appreciated.
Celebrating the show’s eightieth anniversary, Falmouth Academy welcomes Our Town back to its stage having first performed it in 1989, the year the school moved to its current campus. Often errantly mistaken for folksy or sentimental, Thornton Wilder’s 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning play tells an honest story of the fragility of life, uplifting the importance of human connection often appreciated too little, too late.
The character of the stage manager narrates and comments on the play and speaks directly to the audience. The stage manager is thus part of the play and simultaneously outside of it. Wilder uses this theatrical device as a means of inviting the audience into the story. The props and sets are kept simple so that Grover’s Corners can be experienced as any town–our town.
Director Liz Ledwell reflects, "Our own production aims to keep things simple and fill the theater with light, to see the beauty despite the darkness, and to help audiences recognize that we all face the same joys and struggles, "to realize life as we live it," as Emily says in the climax of the play."
