Juniors entering French IV have completed either three or four years of French, building a solid foundation in the language and touching on many areas of the culture, both geographical and thematic. They are ready to perfect their language skills at an intermediate to advanced level while exploring the francophone world in greater depth.
The first goal is targeted by extensive review and expansion of their command of French grammar and syntax, through class presentation followed by application in writing assignments, from sentences to paragraphs to creative pieces, and through daily speaking in the classroom. Readings such as short stories, plays, poetry, and other print and online sources, as well as films, provide material for exploration of diverse francophone cultures. Each trimester has a different focus: France, Québec, then Guadeloupe and West Africa. Classes are discussion-based and conducted in French. Written assignments include short answer questions, essays, and creative writing. Students in French IV are eligible to participate in Falmouth Academy's biennial exchange with our sister school in Nice, France. Students completing French IV are well prepared to take the SAT subject test in French.
